Raise the beds

3 sistersMany of us do not have the room for a huge garden and one easy solutions is to use a raised bed. You could also have one that has several tiers where you could plant different plants on each tier. Indian tribes planted many plants in a small garden plot.

One of the methods is called three sisters gardening, where the corn, beans, and squash are planted together in one small plot. The beans use the corn as their trellis and the squash, with their spines, not only keep the corn roots moist and shady, but also keep some of the predators from the beans and corn.

Another idea to make use of a small space is to go vertical. Any climbing plant like the pole bean, peas, squash, or cucumbers like to grow up. A vertical design could act like a trellis giving you plenty of space. If you place the trellis at the edge of a patio it could act as a wind breaker or a visual object that is pleasing to the eye for the area.
