WHAT NOT TO BRING TO COLLEGE

notWhen packing for college many of us tend to bring everything with us that we had at home just to make the transition a bit easier from home to college life. There are certain things we just should keep at home regardless how attached we are to them.

Pets:

Keep your pet at home. Many campuses don’t even allow a pet unless it is a service animal. When your pet is not a service animal be honest with yourself. Do you really want to have the full responsibility of a pet while you are focusing on your studies? Keep the pet with your parents and enjoy them during your visits at home.

Paper Notebooks:

You might bring one or two, but most of us don’t use much paper any more. Most of everything we do is on a PC, tablet, or laptop.

Phone for Land line:

I am sure many dorm rooms still have the phone jack for a land line but you must pay for the service yourself. Most of us have a cell phone so why pay for another phone service?

Cable TV:

Why do you want to have Cable TV in your room when you have your PC or Laptop. You could just use sites like Hulu, NetFlix, and iTunes and have your computer do double-duty as a TV.

Your car/truck

In most cases you will not need your vehicle to get around on campus. Keep it at home with your parents this will save you gas money and the hassle of finding a parking spot. When you feel the need to get off campus use public transportation or share a ride. Some campuses don’t even allow you to have a personal vehicle on campus which forces you to find off campus parking. This will cost extra money and you will have to walk further to your dorm room.

Credit cards

Don’t fall into the easy money trap. Credit cards are the fastest way for you to incur debt that you need to pay back. Many times with a higher interest rate. Stick with your budget and use your ATM or debit card to access your cash.

Fake ID/ underage Drinking

Don’t risk it. It is not worth it!! The excise police are watching and you would not be the first one they caught. The trouble you can get yourself into could possibly hurt your future job search and employment.
