ORGANIZING A SMALL DORM ROOM
The car is filled to the max with freshman goodies and off goes the caravan to the college. Not remembering what the dorm room looks like from the first visit, they find themselves standing in the doorway of the room trying to come up with an idea on how to put all this stuff into this tiny room.
Let’s turn back time and look at some ideas on how to organize things so they will fit into this tiny dorm room. It would be best to measure the room while you are visiting the campus for the first time. Note where the door, windows, and electrical outlets are located at. If you forget the measurements or lose your list just call the school and ask them. I am sure they are willing to help.
Now plan the move-in like you would any move. Draw the room on paper and in ½ of the room plan where you will place your items because the other ½ there will be taken by a roommate. Most of the time the school will supply the bed but you will need to bring the rest of the furniture. You need to be able to fit a desk, schools supplies, and other supplies in this small space.
Now with your plan in hand you can shop for storage that will fit into the room. There are many places to shop for your items. From the large discounter to furniture stores and second hand stores. My personal favorite place to shop is my local IKEA store. Their furniture is reasonably priced and will fit into an active lifestyle. Plan the move-in and placement of furniture ahead of the move. This way you will have time to enjoy some time on campus before you have to say your goodbyes.
