Dressing for success has been pushed into a corner and is collecting dust

business suit and tieIn this time of social media, web and video conferencing some of us never needed to leave the trusty office  or our desk to make a sale or reach a client in person. Some of the personal interaction has been lost in many areas and dressing for success has been pushed into a corner and is collecting dust.

Sometimes when you would like to move up your personal career ladder or would like to attract potential new clients to work with, dress the part every time all the time.

Ok..Immediate disclaimer. When you work construction or any other job that requires you to dress for safety or job specific do so and when you are in meeting dress professional.

Dress for success still holds true today.

No matter what someone has accomplished in the past, when you don’t dress the part when you attend a meeting, conference or networking event you might not get a second look, even so there might be a potential clients or employer in the room that has exactly what you are looking for.

Some of us might need a little help with picking up the more favorable outfits to wear for the desired client or position we are striving for and there is nothing wrong with asking for help. Many of the larger department stores have personal shoppers who can help you pick out something to wear. You also could consult a personal image consultant, or style coach who could help you find your personal style while shopping with you.

  1. I’ve seen too many Realtors come to closing in jeans and Tshirt and I’ve seen them at showings looking like they just rolled out of bed …. maybe they did!

  2. It still amazes me how I see REALTORS, dressed, it’s like when they are their own boss and independent contractors they think they can do and dress as they please.
Not considering how they look and how it reflects on our profession and what the rest of us do to strive to be professionals.
We have always had a dress code in our office and always will.

  3. I think it is always important to dress well especially when you are out networking or meeting with a client or potential employer. It does make a good impression so many people today are so casual it is embarrassing. You know the old saying “The first impression is the last impression”.

My husband always dresses to the nines (extremely well for you younger folks) – he gets better service when going to the store, bank or where ever.

Try it dress really casual and go somewhere you need service then dress up and go you will see a huge difference in how you are treated…

  4. I agree with Ida. A Realtor should look like he/she wants to make a sale. Not look like they Need to make a sale. where is your pride people?

  5. This was a good read. It is appalling how some in our profession show up for meetings with clients. Do people not own mirrors anymore or have we become so complacent that we don’t care how we present ourselves. It is a reflection of what is going on today in general with people showing up everywhere dressed as if they did just roll out of bed in the morning.
